Geshe Sonam Wangchen, now in his early 50s, is a deeply devoted humanitarian. Born with a profound calling for wisdom and service, he spent nearly two decades (1991–2010) at Sera Monastery in India, where he studied Buddhist philosophy, ethics, and meditation, eventually earning the prestigious Geshe degree in 2010.
In 2011, he arrived in Nepal, choosing a path of complete selfless service. Guided by the teachings of the Buddha, he began working with vulnerable and marginalized communities—offering spiritual guidance, emotional support, and practical aid. He volunteered across nearly 15 rehabilitation centers in Kathmandu, offering meditation classes, counseling, and job placement support for recovering addicts.
His impactful grassroots efforts eventually led to the founding of Hope and Challenge (H&C) in 2014, a registered non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting individuals most in need. Under his leadership and coordination, H&C has:
Established a free rehabilitation center for addiction recovery.
Provide daily meals for over 150 people, including the elderly, differently-abled, street children, and the homeless in Syambhunath & Boudha or Pashupati every day.
Support the education of underprivileged children, many from single-parent or low-income households.
Started Dickey Tsering home, a home for orphans and underprivileged children while they’re attending school.
Launched anti-drug awareness campaigns reaching over 50 schools and public venues.
His life is not defined by age or accolades, but by an unshakable commitment to uplift those forgotten by society.
